SIRS Score

SIRS interpretation

0 to 1 point: SIRS not present
2 to 4 points: SIRS present

Equations used

SIRSScore = TempFactor + PulseFactor + WBCFactor + RespFactor

Calculation Details and Variables
  • TempFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Temperature >38 degC TempFactor = 1
    • Else if Temperature ≥36 degC TempFactor = 0
    • Else TempFactor = 1.
  • PulseFactor is assigned values by this ordered logic:
    • If Pulse >90 beats/min PulseFactor = 1
    • Else PulseFactor = 0.
  • The RespFactor is set to 1 when the RespiratoryRate is >20 breaths/min or the PaCO2 is <20 mmHg. Otherwise the RespFactor is set to 0.
  • The WBCFactor is set to 1 if the WBC is <4,000 #/microL, the WBC >12,000 #/microL, or the WBCBandPercent is >10%. Otherwise the WBCFactor is dset to 0.
